The first Malayalee Pentecostal worship gathering in
the Metro Detroit area was held
in Waterford, at the residence of V. Solomon, in September 1974. Late pastor
T.G.Oommen
(India) and late Rev. K.V.Kurien (NY) were chief guests in that meeting. It was a combined
meeting of Pentecostal and Brethren believers. During 1976-1977, several South Indian
families moved to Pontiac and Waterford area in Michigan. However, in October 1977, a few
Christian immigrants of Kerala descent of similar faith felt the need to worship the Lord
in
their mother tongue, Malayalam. They have formed a small congregation of 15-20 people and
began to worship, first at different homes and later in rented buildings. Initially, the
gathering
was affiliated with Full Salvation Union (Northville, MI), an American church. In
1986, the
church membership felt the need to be independent of the American church, and
incorporated
as an ecclesiastical corporation called The Indian Christian Church. During the
early
years of the church, Rev. Abraham K. Abraham served as the senior pastor of the
church.
In 1994, Rev. Mammen P. Varughese was appointed as the senior pastor and continues
to
serve the church till today. In January 1999, another small congregation of similar faith
(Emmanuel Pentecostal Assembly) merged with the Indian Christian Church. In August 2001,
the church purchased the property located at 1630 Joslyn Ave, Pontiac, MI. At present, the
Indian Christian Church conducts simultaneous services in English and Malayalam on Sunday
mornings as well as other meeting as shown in
